Getting Here and Getting Around

Most of the major airlines fly into San Diego International Airport, commonly called Lindbergh Field, near downtown San Diego. If you enjoy riding the rails, Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner travels to San Diego from Los Angeles and other major cities on Amtrak routes. The majority of San Diego visitors drive in on I-5 from Los Angeles — just 90 minutes north — and northern California, I-15 from Las Vegas, and I-8 from Phoenix.

Getting Around San Diego
San Diego is a large and populous city, so it’s convenient to have a car to get around, but you’ll want to avoid traveling during rush hours if possible.

If you fly in, car rentals are available at the airport. You might even skip the car rental and use one of several convenient public transportation options for your visit:

Trolley
The San Diego Trolley will take you to Old Town, the Gaslamp Quarter, Tijuana, downtown San Diego, the Convention Center, and Seaport Village. It stops near many hotels and visits Mission Valley and Fashion Valley Center. The trolley is also an ideal way to get to sporting events at Qualcomm Stadium, Petco Park, San Diego State and Viejas Arena.

Taxi
Some popular San Diego destinations such as SeaWorld, the Wild Animal Park, La Jolla, and the beaches are not along the trolley route, but you can take a taxi from downtown for about what you would pay for a rental car, gas, and parking.

Coronado Water Taxi and Ferry
Why not skip the traffic and ride the ferry or a water taxi to Coronado? You’ll enjoy the views and the laid back trip across the water.
